Travertine Figurative Spirits (2011…)

In September 2011, in Querceta Italy, Copeland began carving a series of figurative spirits in colorfully layered travertines coming from the Rapolano Quarries of Travertini Paradiso, near Siena, Italy. In the Spring and Summer of 2012, the travertine family was expanded.

"Penelope" and "Oliver," two young spirits emerge from within the travertine, plump and filled with life. Moving to see the world that is new to them, "P" + "O" twist and turn. They bend straight stone striations into fresh and interesting patterns of arcs and curves.
